Just by charging purchases on a credit card you can earn points toward a luxury vacation or even support your favorite local charity. Pretty cool, isn't it? Reward cards not only help you earn free air travel, but they can also help you support your favorite educational or cultural institution.

It used to be that most purchases were made by cash or check. Obviously that is no longer the case. If you're going to be using a credit or debit card anyway, you may as well be earning rewards with it, right?

You can earn rewards in many different categories, including rebates at the end of the year, airline miles, free gas, hotel stays, charities or an array of gifts of your choosing from a catalogue. In addition there are hybrid cards that offer one or more of the above rewards.

One thing to keep in mind is that reward and affinity cards vary in their annual fees and credit limits. If you usually carry a balance on your card, you should determine if the rebates you earn are worth the higher interest. A bit of research and knowing your credit needs and bill-paying habits should lead you to the right card.
